Heroes- Catherine Gaines

Heroes come in different shapes and sizes. They can come from any background, and from all different types of homes, and income levels. There is no set of instructions detailing what actions must be taken in order to become a hero. Which is why anyone can become a hero.

You might not know it now, and you might never know it later, but at some point in your life, you have been someone's hero. What you did, might not have been anything extravagant. Helping a little sibling, who was struggling to understand their homework, or chasing off a spider for your arachnophobic friend, might not have seemed like a huge deal, but to them, it might have meant a lot.

Personally, my Mom and Dad are my two biggest heroes. They have sacrificed so much, spending time driving me to sports practices, and competitions. Helping me understand school work, and supporting me every step of the way. They might not have saved the Earth from impending doom, like in the storybooks, but to me they are heroes.

Heroes aren't always obvious, and might not always be recognized for their work. The volunteers, at food drives and animal shelters. As well as doctors and nurses, and all people helping to make the earth a better place.

The thing about heroes is that it is all about perspective. To a four-year-old, their older cousin might look like a knight in shining armor, ready to defend them from every dark closet and scary noise. But the older they get, the more they realize that it wasn't about helping them, and more about the $20 they would get at the end of the night for babysitting. While this is true in some cases. There are some people, who undoubtedly are heroes. Soldiers, who sacrifice their lives for the safety of their country. As well as all of the first responders, who put themselves on the line, for the good of the community.

The saying, "heroes aren't born, they're made" is entirely true. No one is born heroic. But with the right mindset, skill set, and determination anyone can make a difference.

  1. My favorite part of this is when you said that each of us could be someone's hero and not know it, because that is really true.

  2. I love how you discussed perspective! You can be a hero to someone without even realizing it.
