Unpopular Opinion - Cozy is better then Burning By Lily Hoffman

Winter's Rest. By Michael | by Our Big House | Medium

I was unsure of what to write. I wasn't sure if I had any really unpopular opinions until it hit me. During German class we were asked what our favorite season was in German. As the teacher went through the class asking, I knew in my mind that I was for sure going to say winter. But I released as the list went on I heard the answer Summer and Spring more then I heard winter and fall. I was one of the only people that said winter in the whole class. I didn't realize that having winter as a favorite season was not common. I stand by my decision. Winter is better than any season in every way.

As a kid, winter had always been a time of celebration. I have always loved the holiday cheer that comes with winter. For me, winter starts a week after Thanksgiving. People start getting into the holiday spirit. Houses on the street start putting up bright lights that light up the dark. People gather together for the holidays, hanging up garland and bright Christmas trees in their houses. Even though I am jewish, I have always been a fan of Christmas decorations and traditions. My family visits family friends in New York State on Christmas (they invite us to a Christmas gathering every year). I have been going for as long as I remember. Every time, people gather together to play games, laugh, and talk. The spirit that people embrace because of the holiday is something I can defiantly appreciate. Around the twenty first, every year my family also travels to Manhattan (my personal favorite family tradition). We see the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, we see the light show on Fifth Avenue, and we see the decorated windows at Macys.

Many think that outdoor activities are stunted in the winter. I disagree. One of my favorite things to do in the winter is snow tubbing. Its like tubbing on a lake (which I admit is also fun) but you are racing down a big snowy mountain. I have gone many times and I have never had a bad time.  Even though walking is thought of as a summer or even spring activity, I strongly disagree. Walking in the winter is so fun. In December you can walk around touring light shows for the holidays or in January you can walk around a lovely snowy landscape.

Winter is often discredited because it is very cold or because school runs during Winter. While winter can be cold depending on where you live, that is an easy fix. If you are starting to feel cold, you can put on comfy clothes to warm up. You can wear things like fluffy sweaters, cozy sweatshirts, or puffy jackets. Accessories like scarfs, hats, glove can keep your head, neck, and hands from freezing. Being cold is a lot easy to fix then hot in the summer. If you are wearing cool clothes and you are hot then there isn't that much you can do but if you are cold you just add a blanket or you just put on a sweatshirt. Most kids in school don't like winter because most of it is spent in school. I don't mind this. During the duration of winter there is many days off of school. For example there is winter break, presidents day, and Martin Luther King day. In conclusion, while winter does take place during the school year, the amount of days off makes it totally worth it. The pros of winter definitely outweigh the cons. Winter is a time of festive and cozy cheer. No other season can truly bring to the table what winter can.

  1. I think I had a greater appreciation for outdoor winter activities this year, but I really love April through December! I can do without January - March.
