The Unsung Heroes of the Coronavirus Pandemic

Being stuck at home for the last nine months, which have felt more like nine years, has brought out both the best and the worst of us. It's caused us to learn all about ourselves and the people around us and the challenges we are facing in the tall task of returning to normalcy. As people's true colors are revealed, the most selfless and brave of us can be found at the front lines fighting the virus and saving lives. In no particular order, here are some of the more underappreciated heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. Vaccine trial volunteers

As scientists and doctors around the globe rush to create a vaccine for the Coronavirus and drug companies race to finish first, thousands of volunteers have risked serious side effects in order to further vaccine research progress. The actions of these volunteers potentially putting themselves in harm's way in order to help others as soon as possible are commendable and do our country and the world a great service.

  1. Waste and sanitation workers

Even before the beginning of the deadly pandemic, sanitation and waste workers already faced dangerous working conditions such as infections and injuries. In some cases sanitation workers have been getting redeployed to clean quarantine centers, exposing themselves and their families to the virus and its unknown long-term health effects. Sanitation workers also face increased exposure to the virus in other cases, since they have to interact so often with objects that have been frequently touched and possibly infected, like public bathrooms, sinks and door handles.

  1. Grocery delivery/food delivery/rideshare drivers

During the pandemic, it has been very difficult to safely get groceries and food. An alternative that is rising quickly in popularity is using a grocery delivery service, wherein an independent driver will assume the risk of being in a public space to pick up your groceries or food for a small fee. This is a great solution since it helps drivers who may be getting less income, supports restaurants, and promotes the safety of those staying home.

  1. Essential service workers

The broadest category of unsung heroes of the coronavirus pandemic is the essential workers who are going into work everyday despite the risk of getting sick. This includes, but is not limited to, retail workers, gas station employees, transportation and public service workers, automotive care, and government employees. Providing the public with a service while putting your own health and the health of your family at stake is a great sacrifice that should be met with gratitude.
