Red - Alicia Gaines

Red is defined as a color at the end of the spectrum, next to orange and opposite of violet.

Red is the color of blood on pale skin.

Red is the color of fire, beautiful, hungry, destructive.

Red is the color that clouds your vision when you’re angry.

Red is the color hatred; the color you feel when there is nothing more to be felt.

Red is violent, red is angry, red is destruction, pain, loathing.

Red is all-consuming.

Red is bad.

But that’s not entirely true.

Red is the color of flushed cheeks and smiling lips.

Red is the color of fire, a fireplace, a candle. Dancing, warm, peaceful.

Red is the color of the hearts you draw in the margins of your notebook, not the color of love, not yet, but the color of promise.

Red is the color of dawn, of the sunset, of new beginnings and happy endings.

Red is the color of passion, of devotion, of warm embraces and touches.

Red is generous, red is hopeful, red is elation, warmth, love.

Red is all-consuming.

And maybe, for good or for bad, that’s all red needs to be.

  1. I love that you took the idea of a definition and put it into a poem!

  2. I thought that you really defined red well by stating the good and the bad. I found that you were able to take red, something we just see as a simple color, and turned it into something abstract.

  3. I love how you came around to the same basic definition, whether for the good or bad side of the meaning. Nice job. :)

  4. I like how you chose a poem instead of paragraph format. It was creative.

  6. This was a really create blog post and I love that you wrote a poem to define the color red. I also really like the repetition of the word "red" at the beginning of almost every line.
