Fact or Fiction: The Modern News - Sophocles' Play

Fact or Fiction: The Modern News

Austen Frattura

How do we know what's real? Who is reliable? What is actually going on in the world? The sad reality is we don't. Media isn't nearly as reliable as it has been in the past. Lies, opinions, and bias have infiltrated our news outlets to the point where it is unclear what is fact or fiction. We are left searching for truth in a world of lies.

This battle for truth was displayed in Oedipus the King by Sophocles. Oedipus searches for the killer of this father. This takes many unexpected twists and turns and ends up proving himself guilty. Regardless of the disturbing outcome, Oedipus searches for truth even when he may not like it at all. This relates to our modern society because we don't search for the uncomfortable truth. We are spoon-fed information and news stories that please us by our favorite news outlets, no matter what side of the aisle you align with. Disrespect and opinions are more prevalent than facts. We are in an age of misinformation.

How do we know what is factual? We really don't. The best way to combat this misinformation is to get your news from multiple sources instead of just the one that makes you feel good and justifies your beliefs. Other unbiased sources can be more informative than opinion as well. If we want fact in today's world we must be like Oedipus and search for truth, even if it is not necessarily the information we want to hear.

  1. This is really true and a good analogy to Oedipus. We don't know what is true and I agree that we have to look at different news sources for information to try and get the clear picture.

  2. This is such a difficult thing because we rely on news sources to get out news, but we don't know if we can really rely on them.
