Choosing the Right Words: Arianna Puleo

Sometimes it's hard to pick the right words. A lot of the time I don't know which ones to choose. Because a lot of words have a lot of synonyms, there are so many options. You don't want to use the same word over and over and over and over because then you sound repetitive. But sometimes, it can stress a point.

Words can depict emotion. The right word can make you angrier, happier, sadder. The wrong word won't make you feel anything at all.

Recently I've been trying to incorporate a more diverse vocabulary into my writing. I've begun to attempt to choose simple yet sophisticated terms for my essays. But it is extremely inconvenient. It takes far longer to write my papers when I stop to determine what phrases each sentence should contain.

Perhaps the result will makes extra time worth it. It just may happen that my writing will drastically improve upon the use of "bigger" words.

As I'm typing this post, I'm reflecting on my choice to find the proper words. By the conclusion of this, I most likely will have stormed off multiple times and looked up a different version of almost every single term in these four paragraphs. Despite this, I have noticed a great improvement from the first passage to the last.

I might not always know which terms best define what I'm thinking, but I can certainly discover a new word that fits my thoughts perfectly.

  1. I totally agree with you! Sometimes the words that best fit and are more sophisticated don't come into your brain when you need them the most.
