Earthquakes in Turkey and Greece - Olivia Flanz

While much of the news has to do with the pandemic and the election, we often forget about other events that are occurring just as we speak such as the massive earthquakes happening in Europe.

On October 30th an earthquake shook the cities of Greece and Turkey. In Turkey’s Aegean Coast, there was a 7.0 magnitude tremor and north of the Greek island of Samos there was reported a 6.6 magnitude earthquake. These earthquakes were so large that there were reports of citizens feeling it in Athens and Istanbul. In the city of Izmir 20 buildings collapsed and the port of Samos is currently flooding due to the mini-tsunami that the earthquake caused.

While there are no reported casualties this story is still progressing. This isn’t the first time Greece and Turkey have been hit with such a large earthquake and sadly it’s not uncommon for them. In Turkey’s eastern province more than 30 people were killed along with 1,600 injured due to the massive earthquake that struck just last January.
