Hurricane Delta

By. Catherine Gaines

With all the hype about COVID-19 and the U.S. presidential election, most news stories have been brushed to the side. However, Hurrian Delta is one, that has been hard to ignore. Residents of the South East were tormented with heavy rains, harsh winds, floods, and flash floods over the weekend of October tenth and eleventh. The Hurrican, since then has been labeled as a post-tropical cyclone. Even as a weaker storm, it was still able to produce more than a foot of precipitation. Leaving more than 600,000 people without power due to downed power lines, flooding, and downed trees.

One of the main concerns about Delta is the colossal amount of rainfall and flooding, on top of the ongoing clean up of Hurrican Laura from only six weeks prior. Hurrican Laura was a stage 4 Hurrican and was labeled as one of the strongest hurricanes to have ever hit Louisiana. Its strong winds produced almost $14.1 billion dollars worth of damage and took the lives of 77 people.

3 million people across the Southeast were under flood warnings or tornado warnings, but before the storm was even over, clean-up and rescue operations were  underway. The mayor of Lake Charles, Louisiana commended first responders calling them, "heroes" as they began searching as soon as the winds died down.

Hurricane Delta has been the 25th big Atlantic storm of the 2020 hurricane season, but only the fifth hurricane to actually make landfall in the U.S. However Continental U.S. as a whole has experienced 10 major storms, making U.S. history, after 1916 which had 9 major land breaking storms. During these uncertain times stay safe, and follow federal weather safety guidelines for major storms, especially during hurricane season.
