Climate Change... Time is Running Out
The most serious threat to our existence on Earth... Climate change. More specifically the change in our global climate due to increased levels of CO2 since the industrial revolution in the mid 19th century. This is causing the Earth to heat up at an alarmingly fast rate. In 2020 alone there have been many instances, most notably the California and Australia fires, that have proven Climate change is a serious threat to life on Earth.
Of course, even with the overwhelming amount of evidence behind Climate change, there is still general disbelief in it. And many who do believe in it, think that they would have too small an impact to truly change anything and they begin to question in and say "What's the point?"
Gan Golan and Andrew Boyd know this and have taken matters into their own hands to hopefully get a message across to the public that Earth does not have unlimited resources and we need to start taking climate change more seriously. Golan and Boyd have reprogrammed the NYC clock "metronome" to become the countdown clock.
This giant clock in union square has gone from counting the time until midnight, to a countdown on the window of time that we have left until the effects of global warming are irreversible. On Saturday, September 19, 2020, the clock read "Earth has a deadline", and then the countdown began. Their hope in doing this is that people will realize that we can't just keep dwindling on and pretending that climate change doesn't exist. We have to act now and act fast before it's too late.
To put that deadline in perspective, at our current CO2 emissions rate, the climate clock will run out in 2,626 days from today. (October 19, 2020) Or on December 28, 2027. That's the year that the class of 2023 will be set to graduate from college. If we as a human population, can't lower our CO2 emissions rates and control our carbon footprint, we won't get to live in a world that's filled with opportunity.
It's not just about us anymore. It's about our friends, our family, the world, and our future as a species living on earth. It's time to step up and work together to solve this climate crisis and leave our future children with a world that they can flourish in.

This is so scary to think about. I hope that clock brings it to the forefront for some people.

ReplyDeleteThat is so interesting that there is an actual countdown clock. The idea that earth “Has a deadline” is frightening as well as awakening. I always thought they had predictions but this idea that it is coming and it's like a ticking time bomb shows how severe the situation is.
This is very interesting beause I didn't realize that there is an actual clock that is countingdown. This definitely brought more awareness to me and I hope it does for many other people too.
ReplyDeleteThis is super interesting and a little scary. To know that we're running out of time is one thing. To be aware of the time and being able to quantify it makes it a little too real. The fact that action isn't being taken is astonishing.
