Colorado on Fire?!
By Austen Frattura
By now, most of us have heard or seen the news about the raging fires in California. But, it seems that the horrific fires are not just a California event. As this is being written, Colorado is burning. In areas west of Denver, there are multiple raging fires that are destroying areas of dense forest and urban developments alike. The bizarre thing is, out of the four wildfires in Colorado, three of them were caused by people. Only one was naturally caused by a lightning strike. We have partially have done this to ourselves. The ignorance of one person can have drastic consequences for many and in this case, it resulted in mass destruction.
The land is not helped by the fact that Colorado experiences dryness and minor drought. The fires just burn through the dry environment making them difficult to stop. The fires have an excess of fuel because of the large amount of Colorado that is pristine forest and wilderness. These forests border right up to developments and as the fires have grown they are very difficult to contain and have burnt to the ground houses and property.
Like every year, Colorado is entering its frigid and snow-filled winter, which should help to contain and put out the disastrous fires for the season. 2020 has been a year full of natural disasters across America. We have seen fires in the West and multiple hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico that eventually made landfall in the Louisiana area. Hopefully, we can close out this year with as minimal damage as possible in November and December. Because whatever way you look at it, it seems 2020 was out to get us one way or another.
It certainly does feel like 2020 has it in for all of us!
ReplyDeleteUgh this is so sad to see:( First California and now Colorado!
ReplyDeleteYour closing statement is so accurate. These fires occur every year and need to be contained- people need to become more responsible, and we need better methods to contain and control these fires.
ReplyDeleteThis is really awful to see. Just lets us know it's still 2020.
ReplyDeleteIt always the worst to see nature on fire. Hopefully the fires will go out in the winter.
