Bye Bye Broadway-Julia Kadar

The pandemic has closed down thousands of businesses, one of the most notable being Broadway.  Broadway was first shut down on March 12 and it was hopefully supposed to open January 1st 2020.  Unfortunately, due to the prevailing virus, the Broadway shutdown has been extended to at least May 30th 2021.  Broadway being closed is a much bigger deal than most people think and it effects thousands of people.

First off, Broadway being closed effects the actors and actresses that work on Broadway shows.  Before Broadway closed, there were 29 shows currently open or in previews on Broadway.  Three Broadway shows have already decided to permanently close during the pandemic and will not be returning when Broadway re-opens.  With Broadway being closed not just actors are being effected.  Light technicians, musicians, sound technicians, costumers, choreographers, directors, producers, set designers, and many other groups of people are directly impacted by the closing of Broadway.  But who else is effected?

Shops that sell Broadway products are being effected by the lack of people seeing Broadway shows.  Restaurants are also being effected because no one is seeing Broadway shows.  Broadway shows bring in thousands of people each year and without those people, shops and restaurants around the theaters won't have as many costumers.

People also forget about off-Broadway shows and the people who work on those.  Off-Broadway has decided to follow Broadway's lead and has closed their doors until Broadway opens theirs again.  This affects actors and people who produce and work on the shows.

It's crazy to think about how many people are effected by Broadway being closed and how much money is being lost due to the pandemic.  Hopefully the opening of Broadway won't be delayed anymore and people can start seeing shows again summer of 2021.
