Donald Trump is the 45th and current president of the United States. He was elected by the Republican party in 2016 and works beside the vice president, Mike Pence. Donald Trump, 74 years old, before entering office was a businessman and television personality. His ultimate goal as president is to "make America great again."
Joseph Biden is an American politician, running against Trump in the 2020 election. He served as the 47th vice president, under Obama from 2009 to 2017. He is 77 years old and a member of the Democratic party. He hopes to become president and change our country for the better.
These 2020 candidates were able to challenge each other, face to face, during the first presidential debate on September 29.
Many would describe this 90-minute debate as chaotic and unprofessional. Constant interruptions by the opponents limited the already restricted amount of time that the candidates had to make their point. It was as if they were more concerned about attacking the other, rather than showing their vision for the country as president. The topics of this debate were supposed to be the Supreme Court, Covid-19, the economy, race, violence in our cities, and the integrity of the election. However, the candidates seemed to barely talk about these important subjects. Overall, the first debate proved to be unproductive and didn't give Americans the information they needed.
The second presidential debate was canceled due to Donald Trump contracting Covid-19 shortly after the previous debate. After his quarantine and recovery, another debate was scheduled for October 22. The topics of this debate were fighting Covid-19, American families, race in America, climate change, and national security. Each of these topics would get 15 minutes. This time around, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, for the majority of the time, were calmer and more controlled. The threat of a mute button forced them to allow one another to have more of an opportunity to speak. During this debate, the American people developed a better understanding of what each person is willing to do for our country.
In the end, the first debate most likely will be the one that everyone remembers. However, the important thing was that these candidates learned how to debate in a more beneficial way for everyone.
The second debate was certainly more controlled than the first.
