Welcome to the new school year, where nothing is the same and almost everyone is upset. 🤷 Virtual learning is really something special. Between the lag and the being kicked from classes, who could be happier? I'm sure the teachers are loving every second of virtual learning, not getting to know their students, being kicked from their own classes, and some teacher's voices are even becoming those of chipmunks while teaching due to the google meet glitches. Students never answer questions during class, so it's a good thing we have extended time to account for all the awkward silence. And what teacher doesn't love having to find all new activities for their students to do online? I sure would. This year is also great for extra-cirriculars. Who wanted to be in a club, music group, or play anyway? Now, students get to stay home all day, without seeing their friends. It's great! Who would want to socialize instead of letting their mental health rot while they stare at screens all day? I, for one, am loving virtual school. Even just last night I got the esteemed honor of finding out my chromebook is broken. Yay! Also, this morning my WiFi was so bad, I couldn't even get to one of my classes. Who doesn't love things breaking and getting so stressed out they feel like they're going to explode, but they know they can't because they're being watched by a tiny little camera all day, so they just bottle it up until the end of the day when they can finally let all the frustration out? I know I do!
To be fair, many teachers are doing a great job adapting to this virtual setting and most students are as well. Virtual and hybrid school isn't what anyone wants, but it's what we're working with, so we need to try our best. Make sure you appreciate what teachers are doing, because as bad as it may be for you right now, I can almost one percent assure you they have it worse. Also, I can almost assure you teachers have to deal with more annoying children in one day than you will in your entire life. That's all for now, signing off.
I LOVE the sarcasm you had in the first paragraph; it honestly made me smile. This was an interesting, entertaining take on our situation, and I appreciate that you gave a nod to the teachers and staff--we students aren't the only ones struggling. Looking forward to seeing what you write next!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Elizabeth. Honestly I was enjoying the sarcasm!
ReplyDeleteThe sarcasm was really unique and different and I found it really intriguing. It really summed up the struggles of distanced learning. And the emotions of students when they can't get onto their meetings. I know I have felt scared, and frustrated trying to get onto meetings myself. The acknowledgement of the teachers was really nice because they are trying their best and doing a great job adapting.
ReplyDeleteDo I sense a hint of sarcasm? Lol I like your take on the current situation- it was light and made me smile. but, did you mean 100 % or was it really 1%? : )
ReplyDeleteThe sarcasm kept me so interested!!! A different way to write about the inconveniences of online school really worked for this piece. I laughed a little bit:)
ReplyDeleteEven though I don't like virtual learning, you made some compelling points. I have to admit I do like waking up later in the day, so maybe I'll give it another shot. More importantly, your argument and perspective were clear and easy to understand, very well done.

ReplyDeleteThe fact that you decided to end this with the focus being the teacher's well being just goes to show how thoughtful you are of others Julia. And the comical spin of writing in a sarcastic tone really exemplifies your abilities as a writer. Although virtual learning sucks, others have it worse.
