Thoughts About the School Year: Middle vs High Schooler- Lilli Wiegand

2020 has been a year filled with numerous events that no one could have ever imagined happening, mainly including the world wide pandemic which caused everyones life to go on hault. Back in March when we first went into quarentine no one thought this would last more than a couple of weeks, let alone six months. Every person came across new and different challenegs cause by COVID-19, and now for students, theirs is starting a whole new school year virtually.

My sister is in 6th grade, and all she's been talking about all summer is finally being in middle school and feeling like a "big kid". She was excited to start in a new school, finally be able to switch classes, and socialize with all of her grade now easier. But when we got the news that Sparta would be all virtual it was like that whole experience got ripped away from her and put on hold. It is hard for younger kids to adjust to such big change like this. It is hard enough adjusting to a new school, and taking on the harder classes and workload that comes with middle school, but now these kids have to do it all online too. They are not able to meet with their teachers in person and discuss with classmates normally which makes it much harder for younger kids to learn. Having a sister that is in this situation I can see how hard it is for middle schoolers not having the same learning experience as we did in middle school.

Personally, I think that being a high school student during this virtual learning is of course not easy, but not nearly as hard as middle schoolers, or even younger kids. For us it is easier to learn online, communicate with out teachers, and be able to get our work done. I think mostly for highschoolers it is the experience that we are missing out on. Sports are not the same, especially now for me personally having to be in quarentine again because of soccer. We do not get to go to football games, have school dances, school plays. and many more. I think that highschoolers we are missing out on the experience of being in high school, more than missing out on the actual learning aspect of school.

  1. I agree with you, even though the situation stinks for all students, I think it's worse for the younger kids. High schoolers are more mature and resilient and they know why it's happening, but the younger ones may not have that. I do, however, feel so bad for our seniors...again missing out on those memories. Hopefully we get back to "normal" soon.

  2. Having three younger brothers, I can definitely relate to this. My one brother has to miss his eighth grade year! Hopefully not for the whole school year, though. I have another brother in sixth grade, so he felt the same exact way that your sister did. It sucks:(

  3. That is very true, it must be so hard with the younger students not being able to spend a "first year." I feel bad for those new coming into 6th grade or freshman year. These years are the ones you use to find your way around the school and get used to the adjustment. Now those are gone, I'm hoping this doesn't have a huge effect on them once we go back.

  4. I completely agree with you and feel bad for the younger kids as they have to adjust so much more to virtual learning. We as students in high school are capable of using technology and focusing on a screen and lectures all day when younger kids are more easily distracted, making it harder for them to learn.

  5. I can't even imagine how hard that transition must be for her!
