The Power of Books- Jonathan Byrnes

Books. Something so simple, yet so fascinating. We all know what a book is, but they affect individuals differently. A book to you just may be an object or pages with words all over or a means of information. But for me, books are different. They bring comfort and happiness (that is of course if I'm reading books that fall under the genre of my liking). The thing about books is that you have to want to read them. I have found when I want to read, I am happier, more relaxed, and enjoying myself, but when I'm not in the mood to read a book, it's the complete opposite.

I used to read often, but then as I got older, I stopped reading because I didn't have enough time. Now with the quarantine, I have been able to slowly start getting back into that groove. Once I started reading again, that instant joy came. Reality started fading, my imagination kicked in and soon I was in my little world, unaware of what was happening around me. It was this feeling that I missed so much, being able to take a step back from the world to enjoy myself for a little bit.

Being able to feel that is important to me because I rarely get to feel that anymore. I'm very busy working on the present day but also working for my future. So, I don't have the time to step away from everything and get life in another world for a few hours. Books are that threshold into our escape. Our escape is when we take a step back from life, including all the problems it has for us, to find peace or joy or happiness or a sense of thrill inside of us. Depending on which books you like to read, you can find those feelings within yourself as you enter your imagination.

Life throws us curveballs all the time, but one thing it can't take from us is books. We all need something that will always be there for us no matter how long we stay away. I spent a long time just reading because it was required for school. I was surrounded by books yet, never picked one up to read. These books patiently waited for me to pick one of them up and read for fun. Picking a book up for the first time in months to read reminded me that I will always have books to escape to whenever I need them.

Not only have books provided this escape for me, but they made me feel accomplished. During this time where we can't do much, having this feeling of accomplishment is important because we all need to know that what we are doing is worth it. This quarantine has brought a new lifestyle among us all and if we went back to how life was before, finishing a book wouldn't feel like an accomplishment at all. Finishing a book would feel like nothing, just part of a regular day. But since our lives have been turned inside out, little things like finishing a book mean a lot more.

Books are small objects, yet they can open our imagination to worlds never thought possible. For being such small objects, books, bring a swarm of accomplishment. Without books in my life, I don't know where I would be. As a young boy, I grew up reading books like they were nothing, and now older, I appreciate books more for what they do for me than just reading to pass-time or reading because I have to.
