The Importance of Music by Molly Englehardt

Have you ever experienced a moment in your life where you wanted nothing more than to disappear? Not in the literal sense, of course, but to feel the absence of all stress and anxieties in your life?

I think, to a degree, everyone has felt this feeling at least once.

Recently, I have delved into a solution: Music. Millions of people all around the world spreading their ideas and epiphanies via their own sounds and styles. Millions of stories, emotions, and lives, all being played through my speaker. I have found these stories to be calming as well as a way to keep my mind off of my own problems. Every time I press play on a new song, I'm hit with a moment of sonder--the realization that people live lives as vivid and complex as my own. This feeling has set many of my issues into perspective and at certain times, helped me keep my composure in the face of stressful situations.

Music removes you from the world around you-- away from the troubles of everyday life. It can make a person feel a wide range of emotions. Be it a song to boost your mood or maybe even to make you cry.

If I ever couldn't sleep, playing music would ease my conscience and help me drift off. If I ever had issues concentrating on my homework, some light music in the background would get me back into the groove. I listen to music when I run, when I bike, when I draw, when I do any task that may be seen as boring or tedious. Music brings enjoyment to any activity, no matter what. And because of this, music is very valuable to me. I hold it on a high pedestal, as something that is precious to my heart. I believe that many other people do as well-- music is special to everyone in varying degrees, and it has changed my life for the better.
