Winter Sports in Jeopardy- Bailey Chapman

Winter sports are in jeopardy due to the COVID-19 becoming worse during the holiday season. Many are concerned that these indoor sports will cause a rapid spread of the virus. Sports are so important for teens during this time and I believe the last thing they should do is cancel them. My basketball team and I will be devasted if the season is canceled. To not be able to play my sophomore season will be heartbreaking. Although AAU basketball provides me with a way to play, the high school season is the time I look forward to all year. No season means missing out on many celebrations, accomplishments, and individual and team milestones. All winter athletes waited and worried about the announcement that they were told would be made very soon.

Finally, the announcement was made. The return to play procedure was released by the NJSIAA on November 19th at 9:50 am. They stated that winter sports would be pushed back to January and the state tournament was canceled. Winter athletes will have to wait until 2021 for action. Basketball practices are allowed to begin on January 11th and games on January 26th. Competition is required to end by March 6th. Colleen Mcguire, the NJSIAA's COO, said in a press release that these decisions were all based on the opinions of many health officials. For many, including myself, this was relatively good news. Although the push back isn't ideal, it gives teams more time to prepare. Overall, a modified season is better than a canceled one and I just hope it can stay that way.

  1. Sports are very important for teen athletes and it is a shame that winter sports had to get pushed back due to COVID-19. At least there is still a chance that they could occur, even if it is at a later date.

  2. This really stinks and I agree that the last thing they should do is cancel sports. I do hope that everyone will at least get a decent size of a season and that they won't cancel it completely.
