Flooding in Vietnam - Alicia Gaines

So. News.

Outside of the coronavirus and the election, we really aren’t getting a lot of it.

Ignoring the raging global pandemic, the election, and whatever other insignificant stories that happen to capture our attention for a fraction of a second, the American news has been limited in its content.

The stories that have been monopolizing news time are nowhere near covering the span of news-worthy events that are actually happening around the world.

To be fair, this year has shaped up to be pretty crazy.

That aside, have you heard about the flooding in Vietnam?

On October 21, Vietnam saw one of the largest floods it has in decades; a result of particularly heavy rainfall following the La Nina weather system. The aftermath of the flood has seen the death of over a hundred people, and the destruction of thousands of homes. The flooding has left hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese in need of emergency shelter, drinking water, food, income, and medical care. Red Cross disaster teams are working to aid relief efforts.

Reports estimate the loss of cattle and poultry to be around 691,000. Over 7,200 hectares of farmland have been lost as well.

Ignoring agriculture and food for a moment, the Vietnam News Agency reports the damaging of sixteen national highways and over 161,880 meters of local roadways in four provinces.

The flooding isn't the only thing the Vietnamese have to worry about. Weeks of flooding have also led to an increase in landslides and subsequent destruction.

Over thirty deaths have been attributed to landslides over the past few weeks.

These disasters have led to unbelievable destruction, and have left thousands in need.
