The Issues With Online Learning: My Thoughts of This School Year so Far
The school year so far has been one to remember. With the spread of COVID-19 and the institution of quarantine, everything that was considered normal six months ago is completely foreign. Since the beginning of September, all students in the district have been subjected to online school. The day consists of four hour-long zoom calls where the classes alternate between "A" and "B" days. This jarring change to the average school day has caused some issues, though it has made certain tasks easier.
I personally think that this online learning, though it seems to be the only safe option amidst the coronavirus outbreak, is troublesome nonetheless. Due to this change in schedule, students can no longer see their friends or have face to face learning and conversation with their teachers. In addition, the actual quality of learning and understanding has regrettably taken a hit. Most students find it difficult when learning without having lessons in front of them. So having a lesson over the screen, with little visual aid, is much less productive and will turn up less positive results than in-school learning. In addition, connectivity and internet problems have led to students and, in some cases, teachers to be booted off of online meetings. Having unreliable connectivity in a learning environment is a bad mix-- students can accidentally miss important information about the lessons or homework.
Online education has made the school year so far a bit hectic and difficult. Despite all of this, virtual learning is, unfortunately, necessary to keep students and teachers alike safe during the pandemic. It may be difficult or frustrating at times, but it is a vital step in keeping the virus at bay.
I agree! Virtual learning definitely presents many challenges in our learning career, but it is the necessary path we must take to continue our education. The whole situation makes us all adapt and grow, and I think we will all be better off in the future once this blows over.
ReplyDeleteIt's true! This online learning has brought challenges not only for students, but for teachers, staff, and everyone involved. We are all struggling through this, but everyone is very understanding which definitely helps because we are all going through the same thing.
ReplyDeleteA- it's nice that you remembered that teachers and staff are also facing these challenges and we're just as frustrated as you guys are.
DeleteIt's amazing how quickly we all realized that we really need to see each other in person, we need that human connection - maybe more than we need anything else!
ReplyDeleteAll of what you said is highly accurate! The hour long classes seem so much longer is the cases where everything is notes. These technology issues take the fun out of learning for students and the fun out of teaching for the teachers. Not to mention, the teachers don't even get to see their students in the classroom, which is half of what they enjoy about their job. I hope this ends soon too so we can go to school and be in the classroom physically instead of virtually.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100%! I miss being in school with my friends, and I am finding it harder to learn through a screen. The delays and internet issues really need to be fixed; it's not going to fix itself!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! Things have been a lot different and this new learning has come with a whole slew of challenges. I think the social aspect has suffered the most too.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you offered both positive and negative points in your post. Really well done Molly:)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in terms of how the social aspect of our lives has taken a hit. It's really easy to take for granted how we could all so conveniently see each other.
ReplyDeleteI completely am on board with both sides of your argument, how we have to learn a bunch of new tech to get the schooling done, but we also know that its the best thing for the world, and we'll be better people at the end of it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all the viewpoints you express, that this is probably the best way to have school right now, even though there are many problems with it. I also really enjoyed your use of varied and interesting language.
