Fall 2020- Meghan Smith

My Thoughts On the School Year So Far.

Here at Sparta High School, we've just finished our first full week of school. By school, I mean virtual learning. All of our classes are on google meet, and we don't really get to see any of our friends and teachers face to face. Its... different. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it yet. On one hand, I think it's great because I can wear my pajamas to class. On the other hand, I miss seeing my friends and meeting my teachers face to face.

My mom, who is a 3rd-grade teacher in Sparta schools, also agrees that this isn't truly school. She knows how hard this is for the students on the other side of the screen, and for the teachers on her side. She just wants me to do my best this year, and she knows that there will be different struggles for each and every day.

I interviewed my sister, who is an 11th grader at Sparta High school, to see how she was feeling about her virtual classes.

Here's how it went.

How do you feel about online learning so far? I don't like it because I think its like education but its not school. It doesn't have what makes school, school. It's not being with your friends either.

What is your favorite part about online learning? Being able to go to the bathroom between class and also getting to wake up later than usual. That's great.

what is your least favorite part about online learning? How long the classes are. They're like insanely long, I don't like them at all.

What do you find easy about it? I think I have a more one on one experience with my teachers, but again that's just me.

What do you find difficult about it? Trying to stay concentrated is really difficult right now.

Do you think we will be able to go back to school in November? In November? No. I hope we will but there are people who aren't social distancing in Sparta and making the goal of going back in November a lot more difficult. But I do hope we will go back eventually.

As we can see from the interview, my sister shares a lot of the same opinions as me. But even with the social distancing and the frequent computer buffering I hope that we can come out of this year better, smarter, and nicer people as a whole.

  1. I'm sure it's even harder for your Mom's younger students to learn online. I like your interview!
